Being healthy to most people means eating right and participating in a variety of exercises. Many of us look at food labels, read up on exercise methods and read about the latest anti-oxidant food-fad. However I believe we regularly overlook what we are putting on our bodies – creams, soaps, lotions and deodorants. If you were to read some of your brand name items I would bet 99% of them would have a collection of some rather long-winded chemical names as part of their ingredients.
Would you eat it if that were on your food packaging? I am guessing not, so therefore why put it on your skin? Your skin absorbs these solutions so if you don’t want it in your body, don’t go putting it on.

There are some fantastic companies out there who specialise in fully natural products such as Rocky Mountain Soap Company and Ishga – both of whom have fantastic facial skin care collections – and what is great about these products is that they are actually as effective, if not more effective, than the ‘luxury’ products that you can buy.
I have been trying out a lot of natural products recently and I always get a bit of a shock that some of the products are only made with a fraction of natural ingredients – they can claim to be organic and natural so long as one or two ingredients actually are, which is somewhat misleading in my opinion.
So to start you off, here are some of the best tried and tested items:

So to start you off, here are some of the best tried and tested items:
Face: Upon moving to Canmore, Rocky Mountain Soap Company lured me in with their phenomenal smelling store on Main St (they also have fantastic bags that say ‘Do not eat’ as their products really do smell good enough to eat). I would highly recommend their facial collection: Cleansing Oil, Hydrating Toner and Pomegranate Face Cream. They offer a travel sized kit which includes all three items which I bought at first to try it out on my skin. |
Face Oil: No matter the season my skin tends to dry out significantly and as a result I look rather tired and grey. After reading about real natural skin products I discover Ishga and their Nourishing Face Oil. The oil is brilliant for rehydrating my skin and making my skin feel delightfully juicy! They have a wonderful collection of Organic Scottish Seaweed Skincare and can be found in numerous spas in the UK. |
Teeth: Flouride free (much to the horror of my dentist) and leaving your breath minty fresh without the chalky feel around your mouth, Kiss My Face Cool Mint Gel toothpaste is amazing! |
Deodorant: This category was genuinely the most difficult to even get off the ground as I tried over 15 ‘natural’ and aluminium free deodorants and they were all rather shockingly ineffective. Although not 100% natural the winner is aluminium free and it really does work. Really really. I have tried and tested it while teaching Pilates, doing Pilates, Bikram Yoga and running – it most certainly passes the test. Adidas Cotton Tech Aluminum Free Women Deodorant is fantastic for any female. Sporty or not, I strongly advise you to jump on the aluminium free bus! |
