As winter appears to be over biking is back on the activity agenda and as I do not enjoy cycling next to cars I am thus an obligatory mountain biker, though I use the terms ‘mountain’ and ‘biker’ loosely.
We are extremely fortunate to live in Canmore as it is amazing for trails for everyone, from beginners to experts. The Canmore Nordic Centre alone has over 60km of trails for beginners like myself and last year I worked up the courage and cycled the muddy trail to Banff National Park, with a pot of tea stop in the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel as a reward.

Mountain biking, or in my case trail riding, has been a brand new experience and I absolute love it. I am in no way great at it as I cannot fathom why you would ‘drive the bike’ into the hill to gain momentum but I am sure there is logical physics in there somewhere. Nonetheless it is an exhilarating experience and I am very grateful to have such an amazing playground to learn on. As a novice in this sport, I urge you to find a sport that gets the wind flowing through your hair and gets you moving. Who cares if you aren’t a pro at it! Although I already knew my body, living in Canmore has reiterated that I am not in competition with anyone but myself. On a daily basis I have Olympians running past me while I am out a jog or have guys who have been biking for twenty years whoosh past me on their bikes, yet I am unconcerned at my running speed or my downhill biking ability as I am so much stronger than I have ever been. Find an activity that makes you laugh or in my case squeal ‘Jiminy Cricket’ every time I think I am going to fall. | |
