The two B's of Pilates swear words, in my opinion.
Upon beginning this blog and researching what people are saying about Pilates, I have come to discover that people believe that it will make you feel the burn. Or as I hear it in my head - the BUUUUUUUURNN!
For those who have attended any of my classes will know that I want you to build your strength, develop your ability in Pilates and be gravity defying warriors. Why would you need to feel the burn when you can feel healthier, increase your fitness stamina and strength without it? My theory is - you don't.

I understand that some individuals feel that they have not done any exercise unless they feel 'the burn' at some point during their workout, but I also feel that this is a muscle toning myth. Yes, challenging yourself during curl-ups, to come a little higher while maintaining your glorious neutral spine, will cause you to feel your lower abdominals working, however it is not the aim of the exercise.
It is also vital that while participating in the joy of Pilates, that you do NOT brace. I may ask you to hold a position but do not go into a living version of rigor mortis - please avoid this startling frozen look at all costs. Gently breath, stabilize within your body and simply maintain, it is honestly as easy as that.
I much prefer Strengthen, Stabilise and Smile - it makes for a much better workout.
