The other night I was in the mood to watch something enlightening and Netflix certainly succeeded in providing me with an array of intellectual films, one of which was 'Forks Over Knives', a documentary about the impact food has on our lives.
We are all aware that burgers, fried food and anything processed is pretty bad for our internal workings, yet so many of us don't really take heed to this information. Forks Over Knives actually takes this information one step further and introduces the reduction or if possible, eradication, of dairy foods and meats from our diet. Basically the benefits of becoming .... (dun Dun DUN!) ... a vegan. |
I love steaks, love them! Though I don't eat them that often. On the other hand, I somewhat like (or is it put up with?) other types of meat and poultry, therefore the thought of becoming a vegetarian really doesn't bother me. Becoming a vegan however has not even crossed my mind. I love, and could quite happily live off of, milk and yogurt. They are wonderful food products that I want all the time - a very bad sign according to a colleague.
Forks Over Knives documents several individuals journeys on their new eating habits and the results are amazing! Better health, lowered cholesterol, better blood pressure, steady blood sugar levels - the obvious results from eating healthier.

The most startling topic discussed in the documentary was the seriously negative impact of dairy and meat products on our bodies. With the wrong type of calcium in milk causing significant health implications, to the fats in meat increasing cancers due to blocking healthier natural cells (there is much more science than this vague sentence of course), the information behind it was astounding. As with all of these programmes they are created to get their points across which this one certainly succeeded in, however I would be very interested to see what impact such a dietary intake has on myself. I am very fortunate to have low cholesterol, low blood pressure, steady blood sugar levels and according to my last health check, I am delightfully healthy. I have decided I want to find out! What I have dubbed as 'Free From February' (as the word vegan is somewhat daunting) I shall embark on a plant based diet to see if my energy levels rise and my skin glows - as I have been promised.
Stay tuned as 'Free From February' aka 'Gi the guinea pig part one' commences.
In the meantime here is the trailer for Forks Over Knives.
